SCC Executive 2009/10

Chair:
Patrick Blunt

Business Extra Ltd

Patrick who has just been elected to serve a third term of office for the Chamber sees this entirely voluntary role as an important contribution to creating an inclusive local borough that provides ladders of opportunity for all. He sees business not just as a remote activity but one which has to be firmly embedded in local communities and involves business to be seen as givers and not just takers.

After working overseas in some 36 different countries spanning most continents of the world, helping to alleviate poverty and create sustainable development in the Third World he realised that there was still plenty of development work to address critical issues of poverty and deprivation in Britain.

He became first Chief Executive of Business Extra, Southwark’s enterprise agency in 2003 and so far has successfully helped nearly 6000 people to start, sustain and grow their businesses. With clients largely coming from the significantly disadvantaged areas of Southwark (still one of the country’s most deprived boroughs) the promotion of self-help is seen as being more important than continually giving out state benefits, that often encourage continued worklessness.

Vice Chair
Ross Hanley
Travel London Ltd
I am the Finance Director for Travel London Limited (part of the National Express Group PLC). Travel London operates 35 bus routes on behalf of TfL, 30 routes for Surrey County Council, and a partnership route with BAA around Heathrow. The company has about 450 buses, operated from 6 depots around West and South London, and employs around 1300 people. The Head Office, where I am normally based, is in Camberwell.

I am a Chartered Accountant, having qualified in 1982. After leaving the profession in 1984, I worked in Direct Marketing until 2005, when I joined Travel London. I have worked in various parts of London over the years, and since 2005, have had a home in Southwark.

As the FD of a bus operator, I am very aware of the importance of supporting the community that benefit from our services, either as passengers or local businesses. I see that most issues facing the local community have a direct impact on our business, whether it is transport policy, employment, housing, crime, education, social inclusion or redevelopment. I recognise that these issues will also effect most businesses in Southwark. By supporting the Chamber, and its membership, I believe I can help local business (and Travel London) develop to the benefit of the whole community.

Outside of work my main passion is scuba diving, though time for this is restricted by two daughters, one taking “A” levels, and the other, a Fine Art degree.

I am a Partner in the well known South London firm of Anthony Gold Solicitors. I specialize in commercial and residential Property and licensing law. I believe it is very important for all the businesses in Southwark to interact with each other, use their local knowledge and to build local client bases where appropriate. Success breeds success; the stronger individual businesses are the better Southwark will be as a business location and everyone will benefit.

I firmly believe that the Chamber provides support, advice and crucially, networkingopportunities, which promote these aims in Southwark.

That is why I have become involved in the executive of the Southwark Chamber of Commerce
